Amazing Beauty of the Island of Kauai

Source

The Island of Kauai is the most northern of the main Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is named the “Garden Island” for its natural tropical beauty and relative lack of development compared to the island of Oahu. Kauai is famous for several natural features. The most well-known is probably the Na Pali cliffs.

Source

The cliffs are sharp basalt spires on the north of the island.  They are covered with lush greenery and rise up to 4,000 feet directly off the northern beaches.  Most of the mountains lie within Na Pali Coast State Park. The cliffs (pali) are inaccessible to automobiles, and can only be reached via the 11-mile Kalalau Trail pictured below.  The cliffs are popular destinations for photographers via helicopter or boat tours.

The sharp features of the Na Pali cliffs are formed by the heavy rains that fall on Kauai. The highest point on the island is Mount Wai’ale’ale. The mountain is one of the wettest places on earth, receiving over 460 inches of rain each year. The rain flowing off the mountain forms the Waimea River, which has eroded the Waimea Canyon.  The canyon is a popular tourist attraction, named “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

Source

There are several small towns on Kauai, primarily located near the coastline, such as Hanalei, Poipu, and Lihue. The island today is mostly dependent on tourism for its livelihood.  Tourists come to see the island’s great natural beauty, from the jungled mountains to the beautiful beaches. Below is a photo of the popular town of Hanalei.

Source

The northern location of the island means that it can receive some heavy surf during the Winter months from storms in the northern Pacific.

Source

Of course, you can never go wrong with a Hawaiian sunset. They are not all this dramatic, but they are all beautiful.

Source

I hope this helps you appreciate the special features of the Garden Island of Kauai and the unmatched tropical beauty it offers.

The Story of an Amazing Woman-Sabriye Tenberken

Have you ever encountered obstacles in your life? Did you ever feel that it was just too difficult to follow a certain path? Most likely all of us have felt this way, one time or another in our lives.

Sabriye Tenberken, though, had an additional problem to face. By the age of 12, she was completely blind! Did this stop her in pursuing her goals? She is now 40 years old, and by looking at her life we can say a resolute No! She adjusted her path, worked hard and has managed to achieve a lot!

To start with, she decided to pursue a degree in Central Asian Sciences at the University of Bonn. In addition to Mongolian and Chinese, she also enlarged to include modern and classical Tibetan! Add to this sociology and philosophy, and you understand what kind of woman she is.

There was a little problem in studying Tibetan, since there was no Tibetan braille. Braille is the alphabet the blind use to read with their fingers. What should she do? Go for another course, another language? No, she decided to develop a system for writing Tibetan braille. Her system was submitted to a Tibetan scholar for evaluation, and he found it excellent and easy to use.( It is not easy to change Tibetan into braille since it is a syllabic language with sounds, not only letters.)

Sabriye Tenberken now decided to go for a trip to Tibet. This trip altered her whole life. There are many blind in Tibet, a result of its high elevation. The intensity of the sun’s ultraviolet rays damage the eyes. The Tibetans, however, contribute blindness to a person’s sins in a previous life. Hence, blind children are treated as outcasts, as little demons. She decided to help them by starting a school. Here, another problem arose, it was difficult for her to get funding for her school. One of the reasons was that she herself is blind! How could a blind lead a blind, they said. It would be too much for her. But they had underestimated Sabriye Tenberken! She started the school, using her own money and anything she could raise. In the beginning she taught herself, but later she started training local people to teach.

After some years of struggle, also against Chinese bureaucracy, she teamed up with former Red Cross worker Paul Kronenberg. Together they started what later became known as Braille Without Borders. They have helped hundreds of blind children not only to read and write, but also to be independent, to be able to move around and to work.

The work has been hard, but she has never given up. Many of these children were left on the street to die, and would have if she had not made an effort to find them. She actually travelled on horseback to remote villages to look for children!

In 2001 another blind person, Erik Weihenmayer, climbed Mount Everest. When hearing about this, Sabriye Tenberken wrote him a letter. Because of this, another project got under way. Together with six blind youngsters from the school, Erik Weihenmayer went to climb a part of Mount Everest! The expedition resulted in a film, Blindsight. Imagine the feelings of these spurned children when they manage to conquer something as difficult as mountain climbing!

People like Sabriye Tenberken are an enormous source of inspiration to all of us. Obstacles are there to be overcome, to get around. There is always somebody who is worse off than us. Sometimes life will be hard, but usually there is a way out. It might be difficult to find or pursue, but if we don’t give up we will be richly rewarded! Especially if we use our time and resources to help others.
